Export from South Korea to the USA

For South Korea-to-USA freight, verify what the product is and where it qualifies as originating before calculating the purchase cost. A Korean seller, a Korean departure port, and qualifying Korean origin are not interchangeable facts.

Discuss a Shipment

Review KORUS using the manufacturing facts

The U.S.-Korea free trade agreement provides an origin framework, but qualification must be supported for the actual product. Ask the importer and broker to review the applicable rule and evidence before making a preference claim. Keep component and production information available rather than relying only on the supplier's address.

A preference review is not a complete statement of the total duty due. Ask the broker to check the U.S. HTS classification and any current additional measures or trade remedies for the entry date. Do not promise that every Korean-made product has zero import charges.

Create a technical file for each model

For electronics or machinery, provide the model, function, materials, intended use, power specifications, and components that may affect transport or product requirements. Ask the U.S. importer to identify the applicable regulatory review before factory collection. A freight quotation is not product-market authorization.

For spare parts, explain what the part does and whether it is shipped alone or in an assembly. For cosmetics or other regulated goods, provide the actual product composition and intended use to the responsible compliance specialist. Avoid describing unlike products as accessories merely to simplify an invoice.

Disclose batteries and restricted contents early

Tell the transport provider about batteries, liquids, magnets, or other potentially restricted contents before requesting acceptance. Supply the product and packing documentation requested for the proposed mode. Do not describe a powered device as ordinary electronics while omitting its battery.

Keep acceptance tied to the actual model, packaging, quantity, and route. A previous shipment's approval does not automatically cover a new configuration. Ask who approves changes when a supplier substitutes a component or packs spare batteries separately.

Plan around model-level readiness, not only the order total

If several models or purchase orders ship together, record ready dates and packed measurements separately. Identify the critical items and the receiving deadline before deciding whether to wait or split. A small urgent component may need a different plan from the rest of an equipment order.

When splitting cargo, keep the invoice lines, serial numbers where applicable, and transport references aligned. Determine whether the buyer can receive and use an incomplete assembly. A faster arrival of unusable components may not solve the underlying production problem.

Price the U.S. handoff through delivery

Confirm the U.S. importer, broker, final ZIP code, and unloading arrangements. If a machine needs a dock, forklift, rigging review, or appointment, state that before quote approval. Specialized work is not automatically included in an ordinary freight rate.

Compare origin collection, international transport, import services, destination handling, and delivery on equal terms. For ocean shipments, assign the required advance filing tasks to the appointed filer. Keep insurance, brokerage, duties, and contingent handling charges separate in the landed-cost discussion.

What to send before requesting a Korea-USA quote

Provide the Korean pickup address, manufacturer and exporter, U.S. importer and destination, product and model specifications, supported origin, packed weight and dimensions, ready dates, and the agreed sale term. Include battery or restricted-content details and note whether KORUS treatment is confirmed or still under review.

Common Questions

Does a Korean seller prove KORUS origin?

No. Review the actual product's manufacturing facts and applicable origin rule.

Does KORUS qualification settle every duty question?

No. Check the classification and current applicable measures for the entry date separately.

Can a battery-powered device be quoted without battery details?

Disclose the battery and packing configuration before carrier acceptance is requested.
